Oct 2011: Indonesia Volcano - PSA donate to Quake Fund

Since news broke out about fresh volcanic activity from Indonesia's most prolific volcano Mount Merapi, the Piers Simon Appeal have been in close communication with our friends at Quake Fund .

Run by Australian Dave Hodgkin, (a Shelter Sustainability Coordinator with years of disaster relief experience working with the United Nations) and based in Jogyakarta, only 30kms south of the volcano, Quake Fund have been keeping us informed of the situation and the needs of the Indonesian people.

Merapi has been active for over 3 weeks now with over 100 fatalities and 75,000 inhabitants affected by the thick ash and scolding hot steam. The current needs are: masks, two way radios to enable communication in the ash and torches. Priority is also to prepare new barracks and provide emergency supplies for inhabitants who have evacuated their homes.

The PSA have made an initial donation of £1500 to Quake Fund with the hope that more funds can be sent from our Response Fund set up to support the victims of the volcano and tsunami which struck the Mentawai Islands off Sumatra.

Quake Fund and PSA History
In March 2007 the Piers Simon Appeal sent £40,000 to Quake Fund following the 6.7 magnitude earthquake that struck Jogyakarta in May 2006 killing 6,000 people.
The PSA provided funds (£5000) to Quake Fund again in October 2009 following the earthquake that struck south west Java

School in a Bag: We are currently in talks with Quake Fund regarding sending PSA SchoolBags to the Arimba area in Sumatra, Indonesia.
