Piers Simon Appeal launches appeal in response to Turkey Earthquake
THE Piers Simon Appeal has launched an appeal to help the people of Turkey following the 7.2 magnitude earthquake that struck near the city of Van in the North Eastern region of the country on October 23rd.
PSA charity liaison officer, Luke Simon, who runs the Disaster Relief and School in a Bag charity, the Piers Simon Appeal set up in memory of his brother Piers who died in the 2004 Asian tsunami, said: “The Turkey Earthquake Appeal was set up the day before the Turkish government sought International assistance as it was clear from the news and situation reports that the earthquake had caused significant damage and loss of life in what is a relatively poor part of the country.”
The PSA Turkey Appeal will remain open until December 1st and the money raised will be sent to charitable organisations working directly with victims in the stricken country.
Luke added: “At this stage money is the greatest need and from a fundraising point of view, we have to act whilst the disaster is still in the news so we can support the long term financial requirements of the teams working on the ground and the local communities following the emergency response phase. This earthquake will directly affect it’s victims for years to come, therefore, each and every donation will make a difference. When a person's livelihood, home, possessions, profession, prospects and family members have been stripped from their existence, those who survived need all the help they can receive to try and get their life as comfortable as possible initially and then to work towards getting it back on track.”
The PSA are calling on the local Turkish community to help raise Appeal funds for their fellow country citizens. “Following the Japan earthquake and tsunami the PSA worked closely with the Somerset based Japanese community and the response from the public donors was really noticeable” Luke added.
