Tsunami: Galle, Sri Lanka April 2006 PSA Funding: £50,000 to Project Galle
In April 2006, Luke Simon along with work colleagues and tsunami survivors Randall Haime and Jenni Yang visited Galle in Sri Lanka to scope out 3 potential tsunami projects. 16 months after the Indian Ocean Tsunami it was clear that some areas of the Southern Sri Lankan coastline had not been touched since the Boxing Day wave swept through.
Project Galle was an established organisation set up primarily by the expatriate to help regenerate the community and rebuild the many houses destroyed. Project Galle was very well run and Luke was lucky enough to spend 2 days helping the team rebuild a village hall just north of Hikkadua.
The £50,000 fund sent to Project Galle (PG06) paid for:
The complete rebuilding Butterfly Bridge.
The construction of 9 permanent houses.
The regeneration of Green Market.
